So, I’m a long-term/intermittent fan of LDW, going back several years, my initial call was before most of the current Mistresses of LDW were even here – I was on hiatus until recent convo’s with a new Mistress, Callie, and I rapidly got into mode of befriending everyone. She does have lots of friends on the Empire (I’m breean there), and following everyone.
She goes on twitter (i’m @bribribreenyc there), and I just so happened to click on a tweeted link provided by the lovely Ms Ivy, to Heels and Hair, and my eyes fell on the link up top to the “Molecule Game” and well it is NOT every day one sees the word molecule while perusing internet porn/phone sex sites. Jack Pot, a somewhat geeky Mistress. NOT a Chemist, but knows enough to be dangerous, in a good and fun way.
However this game did not originate on Hair and Heels, it was a game Ms Alexandria was conducting on Cock Radio for her show Smooth Jizz.. But all of these Mistresses of Hair and Heels, Twisted Tales, WTF all get together on Hair and Heels and talk about all their other radio shows and contests they are having. And they use the Heels and Hair blog for everything going on in and around LDW.
So, I clicked. I wasn’t thinking to play, it was interesting to see the molecular formulae and I flashed back to quizzes I had as an undergrad in organic Chem.
But I couldn’t help notice some sure-fire typos, like the use of amino acid residues instead of atoms in one molecule, and the presence of twenty nitrogen atoms on one organic molecule, when anything more than 2 or 3 is pretty uncommon, or the presence of one molecule which seemingly cannot exist because there would have been too many bonds on a Carbon atom.
So I typed up a short comment about the typos, and wandered off. But I did get an email from Ms Alex urging me to play the game. I mean, there were 10 molecules, three of which I knew were off, but I could still make some educated guesses. In these days of google and wiki and molecular disambiguation pages (for any given molecular formula, there tend to be many different possible structures; some of these structures actually exist, so you type in the formula and the most likely compounds are listed), it was easy for most of them.
But not for all. There were typos. The first two exist as polymers, not monomers, so typing them in yielded nothing useful, I wasn’t keyed into the possibility that they might be polymers, so one in fact did not exist as a monomer, but can in polymeric form, and the other was something different entirely.
Luckily, many of them were common biogenic amines, serotonin (with 2 nitrogen’s and an oxygen, not 20 nitrogen’s), adrenaline. One mistake that I was keyed into – I was looking for dopamine by the end, but the structure was off by a single carbon. So i gave the answers for both dopamine and phenylalanine.
Anyway, I can’t imagine the answers and all this technical information is interesting to people in general.
But I am VERY glad it is interesting to Alexandria, and it really should be interesting to us all on some levels. She appreciates the chemist, and the chemistry – so She tried. The chemicals in our bodies, the cosmetics, the fragrances, the supplements, the drugs/pharmaceuticals, the dyes, the paints, the cleaners, the rubbers (including condoms, yes!), the plastics etc. etc. etc., that enhances our lives, vanilla and fetish alike, are made and configured by chemists, applying chemistry. It’s sooo dull on some level, people can’t wrap their heads around it, but it is soo interesting.
Pick up a bottle of freaking ketchup, or lube, and everything about it is chemistry, including the contents, the plastic bottle, the adhesive they use to get the label to stick to it, the inks/dyes they use to print the label. How much masturbation could you endure, how much anal probing, without the lubricant?
How many hamburgers could you eat without some good condiments? I realize, I am passing up some opportunities for some good wordplay with condiments and condoms here, but you get my drift…
