Sitting in traffic, listening to WBZ telling you it’s going to take at least 3 hours to get past Totten Pond to get into Boston… trying to get that last swig of coffee from the Dunks cup at home before bailing out the door to hopefully miss the worst of it on the Tobin Bridge? Driving down the highway towards the office flipping back and forth on the radio to try and find that ONE sound that is going to set the tone for your day … who knew you’d find it on WBZ after all.
8:46am, that voice comes on the air … controlled panic telling you a plane has crashed into the North Tower. You are still reeling from how someone could miscalculate their position in the sky when, 17 minutes later a 2nd airplane crashes into the South Tower … then you hear about the Pentagon and
the failed hijacking in Pennsylvania.
Your whole world as you know it just STOPS. The entire nation came to a screaming, grinding halt and we sat in front of televisions, radios and internet websites, sobbing right along with the devastation that rocked our country that day. No one alive today will ever forget where they were the
day we found out the Twin Towers went down.
We have spent 10 years rebuilding NYC, rebuilding the site for a beautiful memorial so that we have a tangible piece of beauty to replace the hole in our hearts. NYers survived and flourish in their homes, and hearts have been healing all this time.
In honour of the sacrifices made by 2,996 human beings, I would like to do something to give back. And here is what I propose.
I will be taking calls from 6am EST until 12am MIDNIGHT on Sunday 9/11. ALL of my proceeds from any calls placed to me on that day will be donated to the American Red Cross.
All callers who make a call between 8:46am and 10:03am, I will match my profits to yours and donate that amount.
10 years is a long time … a slow hurt that is still healing …. I hope this helps to heal the wound a bit more.
Again, my schedule for calls on 9/11 will be from 6am EST – midnight EST. Any profit from these calls (including virtual bouquets) will be donated to the Red Cross and I will post the total earned at the end of the day on Monday.
